Those seeking images that celebrate the outdoors find that Bill’s work stirs their imagination, reminding them of time spent in our shared environment. Seeking to capture a moment in time, Bill’s images are of spaces and places that are changing, whether human impacted or the fleeting hues of a sunset or the shape of a breaking wave.

Each work is an image of a moment that will never be exactly like any other moment in time. The viewer is encouraged to examine a second in their own lives that will become a memory to be reflected upon again and again.

Portfolio

Conservation - Bill’s conservation photography is a blend of nature, wildlife and landscape photography, all with an eye to showing people things they might not see or think about, or to remind people of time in the outdoors.

Milky Way at Cape Forchu - the stars in Yarmouth County are brilliant as the area is a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve.

Bald Eagle pair - our family farm in the Annapolis Valley has always had a pair of eagles living there. Bald Eagles are a true Conservation success story in Nova Scotia.

Tulips - such a lovely flower and an homage to our Dutch heritage.

Landscape - Bill’s fine art landscape prints are renowned for their clarity and interest, with many people feeling that Bill’s work helps them to better understand the places pictured.

Lupins are widely distributed across Nova Scotia - this field at St. Ann's Bay, Cape Breton.

An Acadian marsh in Tusket, Nova Scotia - the first European settlers in the Province were the French who prior to the expulsion lived all along the shores of Nova Scotia.

Island Mist - Nova Scotia has many lakes and beautiful wilderness scenes like this are readily accesible.

Wildlife - As part of Bill’s conservation photography philosophy, many of Bill’s wildlife images show animals in ways most have not observed or in ways designed to educate people about nature and the habitat all of earth’s creatures share.

Red Fox kit - his soft eyes show his inquisitive nature.

Yellowtails on a reef at Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.
Snowy Owl - this image has won awards from shows in Canada, the US and Europe. Lovely birds that appear irregularly in Nova Scotia.

Nature - Bill has won numerous awards for his nature photography, and he earned a Master Photographer in Fine Arts degree from Master Photographers International.

About

“It’s not what you look at, it’s what you see” Henry David Thoreau

I am a Fine Art Conservation Photographer.

I take photographs because I love the outdoors and I want to share with others images of the outdoors that capture the environment, those who live in that environment, and how the environment shapes and is shaped by the lives of those living in it. I take images that either remind people of the outdoors, or help to inform people about our shared habitat. I do this using mainly my digital camera system, although I still do some images from film, and photographing without depending heavily on post processing. I attempt to get the best photograph I can that also reflects the reality of the moment. My technique is ingrained in me through a lifelong use of the Zone system of photography which I learned when I was a child as mastered by my fifth cousin a few times removed Ansel Adams.

I am a 4th generation photographer, my great-grandfather having been a published, active photographer, and his love of scenery and nature has been passed on to me. My first photos were of nature, taken when I was in elementary school, when I used a film camera and I processed the black and white images myself in a wet darkroom. I still personally produce each image using Epson professional quality papers or canvas created on Epson professional printers that use dye and pigment inks. I then mount each photograph on museum quality mattes and archival backs. This process ensures that a finished photograph will last for a very long time – every photograph I sell is guaranteed for the life of the original purchaser and this guarantee is in writing on the back of every print. I also sell images to clients who use them in advertsing or other endeavours. I have been doing all this professionally since 1974.

I now live in rural Port Maitland, Nova Scotia, Canada on a 48 acre piece of land that has been owned by the family off and on for over 250 years. Our home overlooks the Bay of Fundy, and our property provides much to photograph, especially the sky, the marshes, the inlets and the water that fascinate me. My wife, Norma and I enjoy long walks on our beach, but we also spend a lot of time exploring and traveling whenever and where ever we can.

Bio

I was born in a small quintessentially New England town, Groton, Massachusetts – where my mother’s family has lived since the mid-1600’s, having come to America on the Mayflower. Interestingly, my father’s family has been in Nova Scotia almost that long – having arrived as the first group of Scottish settlers in Nova Scotia, prior to 1632, and also with ties to the Mayflower. This duality of background has always been and will continue to be a source of inspiration for me, as it connects me to all of North America and beyond.
I am a 4th generation photographer – my great grandfather was an ardent amateur photographer who left behind a treasure trove of catalogued images. This love of photography was passed on to me, as my Father worked in his Biology lab and had me helping photograph his plant experiments and was furthered when I attended Belvedere School and took photography as an elective during part of my Art courses and had wonderful teachers. This continued when I entered Lawrence Academy, Groton’s prestigious private fine arts secondary school, and continued my photographic training.
When I was 15 our family moved to Nova Scotia, and the influence of the rural lifestyle and beauty of the Province inspired me, and still does, as I enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts at Acadia University. After graduation, I began teaching by obtaining a B.Ed. and two M.Ed.s from Acadia, a graduate diploma in Education Technology from Cape Breton University and finally came back to photography as a graduate of the 3 year Professional Photography program from the New York Institute of Photography, and I obtained a certificate in Photography and Photographic Concepts from the Museum of Modern Art, also in New York City, New York.

My teaching has garnered many accolades; for example, I am the only person to ever win the award of Atlantic Canada’s Entrepreneurship Educator twice. This combination of teaching experience and technology and photography knowledge makes Bill Curry Photography a sought after presence at many photographic workshops. I have taught all grades from Grade Primary to Twelve in public schools, plus I have taught at several Community Colleges and three different Universities. In my teaching, I always had photography in the mix, and gave many, many presentations on photography, technology and entrepreneurship, as well as teacher improvement and professional development seminars. I worked for several school boards during my tenure as a teacher, guidance counselor, principal and system consultant before becoming Director of a school board prior to my retirement to pursue full time photography.
I specialize in Landscape, Nature and Wildlife photography, capturing images of natural surroundings and displaying the images using a technique originated by Ansel Adams called the Zone System of photography. This system encourages the photographer to visualize the final image before being captured, and thus the photographer’s use of light and dark is always foremost in the mind when composing an image. My photographs display this love of contrast, and this accounts for the texture viewers often cite as evident in my images. I am at the forefront of a movement called Conservation Photography, whereby the photographer, through his pictures and writing, documents nature and issues with the environment and human interaction.
I was an early adopter of digital technology, alongside film, in 1997. I currently use mostly digital cameras, but still produce some fine art prints from film negatives. I pride myself on not re-touching or heavily altering my images, instead electing to remain faithful to the Zone System and visualizing the shot in advance, making post shot alterations less necessary. I am also a Professional Master Guide so it comes as no surprise that the outdoors I love so much is the centrepiece of my continuing photographic experiences. I have been writing and providing photographs for magazines and newspapers for over 40 years.

I am an active member of the Photographic Society of America and have won awards and accreditation from the Professional Photographers of Canada and earned a Master in Fine Arts degree from the Master Photographers International all of which have the goals of promoting and improving the art of photography. I am currently providing photographs and content to a number of magazines and news outlets, and have recently been contributing to websites and other electronic media outlets as well. I sell fine art prints of my photographs, and have had my work in a number of exhibitions and galleries. I am constantly expanding my photographic experiences and love to share my work with those who find my material to be of interest. For a more complete list of these activities, please see the News section of my website. I welcome all comments or questions about my work, and would love to hear from people who wish to be in contact. My photography is about the environment and our shared place in it – if these are your values, I hope you find my efforts of interest.
