Apple

Apples
Norma and I drove to a local orchard this past week and we picked up plums, pears and apples – straight off the trees. I love this time of year when all the local orchards begin producing, it brings me back to my childhood on a farm that had two large apple orchards and a good sized pear orchard as well.
We then drove the next day to the Valley, saw our old property and stopped at a local farm market and bought some more apples – Gravenstiens, a species we love, and which we grew on our old family farm.
I walked around our property yesterday and our old apple trees here have some fruit on them, at least where the apples are high enough that the deer haven’t eaten them!
Apples are great as they go into crisps and my favourite pies, and I like to make fresh applesauce out of some as well. It’s the first true sign of fall to me – when the apples are ripening and ready to be picked. As Thoreau said: “Surely the apple is the noblest of fruits.”
