Home Cooking
For the past 5 weeks or so, life here in our place in Port Maitland has been shall we say interesting.
In early-September, our just over 2 year old range decided to fry itself – a pop, some smoke and what do you know, the wiring harness was fried in a couple of places and the control panel was shorted out. We called GE and they are working with us as we did NOT have an extended warranty, but with their encouragement we bought a brand new range virtually identical to the first – a range we both do love (or did until its untimely demise). Living in rural Nova Scotia has its challenges, and it took the full 5 weeks for the new range to be delivered, but it came yesterday, and so the tribute today to once again being able to cook on a stove top and in an oven. I made one of our “comfort meals” to try the new oven out, my aunt Phyl’s meatloaf recipe, my scalloped potato recipe and the last of my acorn squash from my garden.
Life’s little challenges for the last month or so, but we made it through with our one induction hot plate burner, a toaster oven, a slow cooker, a microwave and my BBQ outfits – so not at a loss for how to cook, just not the regular routine. We even had a few people over, some of our summer friends, and managed to feed them before they left for home. Of course, this was also in addition to the added challenge of us having to be very, very careful with water as our well is so low. Unlike many in the area, though, we have the backup of the cottage which has a nice drilled well – and so it becomes the place for laundry and showers.
So, we’re back to almost normal in our kitchen – except for the water issue. Let’s hope we get lots of late fall storms before the snow starts to fly!
