Boxing Day
Boxing Day
Boxing Day in Canada (which actually has little to do with boxes of presents as some think - misleading photo!), originated from the British tradition, and is named for the "Christmas boxes" given to servants and tradespeople by their employers the day after Christmas, containing gifts, bonuses, or leftovers, or from church alms boxes for the poor.
It became an official holiday in Canada in 1871 and is now more commercially oriented - known for post-Christmas sales, similar to Black Friday.
It is, however, an official holiday, so it does mean that for many an extended time with family and friends is the order of the day.
In our family it is about relaxing, being together and maybe watching some of the world Junior hockey or some football.
May you have a family filled Boxing Day!
