Gardening Deliberately
My little 20x20 vegetable garden bed needed a lot of deliberate work this spring, before the planting which will occur in a week or so.
The fence needed replacing to keep the racoons and woodchucks out (at least one of them had found their way in last fall), and the grass around the inside of the fence needed to be all dug out and replaced with mulch as it was that grass that hid the thief's entrance.
I also made the gate into a swinging gate,as that panel had also been attacked by some would be garden visitor, but the netting, which looked quite ragged, held its own.
Thoreau suggested that we should live life deliberately and asked if the effort of growing a garden was a deliberate act of self-reliance. His thoughts were recorded as:

I agree with Cousin Henry, and would add that I also kind of enjoy messing about in my little patch - and it reminds me of another quote-
"To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves." — Mahatma Gandhi
