Daffodils

Daffodils
When we first moved to our property here in Port Maitland, Norma went to work making the flower gardens she loves so much. She planted all kinds of spring bulbs like tulips, crocus, daffodils and hyacinths. For the first number of years all was good.
The experiment was short-lived and got worse. The thing is, the deer here simply love tulips – as a snack! They also appear to enjoy crocus and hyacinth, but do seem to leave the daffodils alone. As a result Norma has a more mono-flowering garden for part of the spring, where she has planted many kinds and varieties of daffodils, and simply doesn’t bother with the other bulbs as they only become deer food.
Human encroachment onto wildlife habitat is I guess to blame, although once again we see that the open space and edges that deer need are becoming so few that they get pushed into closer contact with us as development speeds ahead.
The deer are pretty animals, and we enjoy seeing them, we just wish they’d also have a similar fondness for the flowers as we do, and just look at them, not eat them as a late night snack!
